Using PressReader

PressReader Overview

With PressReader, you can download, disconnect and read over 2,100 full-content newspapers and magazines from 95 countries from the world's largest digital newsstand, PressDisplay.com on your Android smartphone or tablet.

PressReader's advanced features allow readers to:

Authorizing PressReader

Subsequent to completion of any available trial or promotional offer, users are required to register to PressReader should they wish to continue using the service. Once an appropriate subscription package has been selected, or if an existing PressDisplay.com account has already been created, you will be required to authorize PressReader. Here's how:

  1. Once PressReader has been launched, tap the "Settings" icon
  2. Tap the "Accounts" option
  3. Tap the "Authorize" option
  4. Enter your user credentials (E-mail & Password) into their respective fields
  5. Tap the "Authorize" button

Searching for Publications

Once PressReader has been authorized, users can begin downloading publications. To view the newspapers and magazines available for download, tap the "Sources" button in the My Library section. Users then have the ability to view all available publications by country, by language, favorites or recent. Select your favorite search method in the available drop down list.

Users can also search for a specific publication by tapping the search icon and typing the name of a specific newspaper or magazine.

A small round green icon appearing next to the publication date ensures that specific issue has been processed with PressReader's SmartNavigation features. SmartNavigation processing ensures readers have the ability to read articles in text view or in SmartFlow, share articles by e-mail, Facebook or Twitter, listen to articles using on-demand audio, etc.

If the aforementioned icon appears grey in color, the issue has not yet been processed. If no icon appears, the publication in question lacks SmartNavigation capabilities entirely. In either instance, publications without SmartNavigation will open in page view with limited interactive capabilities.

Managing Auto Delivery of Publications

To manage your list of auto-deliveries, tap the "Settings" icon followed by the "Auto delivery" option. In the auto-delivery settings, you have the ability to allow background downloads. Tap the "Allow background updates" to enable this feature. If selected, users will be advised when a new issue is available in their system status bar.

Users also have the ability to unsubscribe from specific auto-deliveries. To do so, tap on the publication you wish to unsubscribe from. Then, simply tap the "Unsubscribe" option.

Managing Downloaded Publications

Publications in the My Library section of PressReader are sorted by the date they were downloaded with the most recent downloads appearing fist.

To delete issues downloaded to your library, press and hold (i.e. long press) the publication you wish to delete. Once prompted, you will have the ability to delete that issue or delete all issues previously downloaded to your library.

Users also have the ability to set up automatic removal of publications. To do so, tap the "Settings" icon followed by "Remove Issues". Then, select the automatic removal option that best suits your needs. Please note that if you have selected a removal option other than "Never" (i.e. after 3 days, after 7 days, etc.) you will have the ability to create exceptions on an issue-by-issue basis by pressing and holding (i.e. long press) the downloaded publication in the My Library section. Once the menu appears, simply select the "Don't auto-remove" option.

Note that offline storage terms are set by publishers and vary by publication. As a result, you may notice that publications have been deleted from your library prior to the removal option you selected in PressReader's settings even if the aforementioned "Don't auto-remove" option has been selected.

User Interface

PressReader's user interface was designed to provide users with an intuitive, enjoyable and easy-to-use reading experience. After tapping the publication you would like to read from your library, you will initially view it in full page view. If reading in landscape mode, you will have the option to view the publication in single page or double page spread view.

In page view, you are able to flip pages just as you would in print. Readers have the ability to pan pages and zoom in by either double tapping the page or by using a two finger pinching gesture. PressReader's proprietary rendering engine for Android allows readers to enjoy articles and images with maximum fidelity.

When a specific story is double tapped, the SmartZoom feature conveniently aligns it with the beginning of the article. SmartZoom can be enabled or disabled in PressReader's settings.

In page view, readers have the ability to copy, listen (using On-demand audio), share or support or oppose articles using the press and hold (i.e. long press) gesture.

Readers also have the ability to read articles or entire publications in SmartFlow. SmartFlow presents complete stories and pages in a continuous, engaging flow that maximizes readability and invites exploration of related content.

SmartFlow can be activated by tapping on any highlighted article heading, tapping the SmartFlow button located in the bottom left corner or by using the press and hold (i.e. long press) gesture and tapping the available "SmartFlow" option.

In SmartFlow, readers have the ability to swipe from article to article in a continuous stream. They also have the ability to expand any article in-line by tapping the green continue arrow. Users can increase or decrease the size of fonts or images in SmartFlow using the pinch gesture. Font preference can also be selected by tapping the "aA" option in the top right corner of SmartFlow. Like in page view, readers have the ability to copy, listen (using On-demand audio), share or support or oppose articles using the press and hold (i.e. long press) gesture.

Please note that SmartFlow is only available on devices with larger displays running the Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich operating systems. Users also have the ability to turn SmartFlow on or off in PressReader's setting menu. SmartFlow is unavailable for the Gingerbread operated devices.

If SmartFlow is not available for your device or you have chosen to disable it, tap on highlighted articles to read them in text view. Or, use the press and hold (i.e. long press) gesture and select the "Text View" option from the menu that appears.

In Text View, you can tap the Menu button on the bottom of your device to access the reading menu. From the menu, users have the ability to increase or decrease the size of the font, share the article, or have the article read to you by the On-demand audio feature.

PressReader Widget

PressReader provides the ability to add a widget to your device's home screen. The PressReader widget will display the latest issue downloaded to your library. Tapping the widget will conveniently take you directly to the publication.

To set up the widget, simply press and hold (i.e. long press) your device's home screen (or other blank screen), select the Widget option and scroll the menu below until the PressReader logo is visible. Then, simply tap PressReader to add the widget to your device's screen.
